Week 1 Class 1 - Markdown ⬇️

“What is Markdown?”

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that you can use to add formatting elements to plaintext text documents.

“Why do we use Markdown?”

Markdown is favored over WYSIWYG editors for its versatility and compatibility. It finds use in web development, documentation, emails, presentations, and more. Markdown files are highly portable, opening in various applications and allowing easy migration between Markdown editors. Its platform independence means it’s accessible on any device and operating system. Markdown offers future-proofing as its plain text format ensures readability even if the original app becomes obsolete. Lastly, Markdown’s widespread support, from websites like Reddit and GitHub to numerous desktop and web apps, cements its position as a go-to choice for those valuing simplicity, consistency, and broad adoption in text-based content creation.

“What symbol will create a heading in Markdown?”

#

In Markdown, the ‘#’ symbol is used to create headings, with one ‘#’ for the largest and up to six for the smallest.

“When making text bold or italicized for emphasis, it is best practice to use which symbol?”

Markdown applications have inconsistent handling of underscores within words. For better compatibility, use asterisks to emphasize or bold text within a word.

**This** is an example

To generate a hyperlink, enclose the link’s display text in square brackets, such as [Duck Duck Go], and immediately follow it with the URL enclosed in parentheses, like this.

“What are the three symbols you can use to create an unordered (bulleted) list with Markdown?”

To create an unordered list, add dashes (-), asterisks (*), or plus signs (+) in front of line items. Indent one or more items to create a nested list.
